Manual handling

Half day course. To be conducted in a selected workplace wherever appropriate.

Who should attend?

This 3 hour practical assessed course is appropriate for managers and employees alike as all aspects of manual handling in the workplace are addressed. Course delegate numbers are based on the minimum of 4 and maximum of 6.

Course content

The learning outcomes will enable the delegate to:
– plan handling activities via ‘de facto’ and formal risk assessment methods;
– apply risk assessments in the workplace (practical assessed element of course);
– explain the benefits to be accrued from planning and recording of handling assessments; and
– describe the types of latent harm that can be caused by incorrect handling activities.

The syllabus will cover:

  • common injuries
  • musculoskeletal disorders; skin; back; physiology of human spine;
  • vertebrae structure, especially lumbar discs;
  • hierarchy for risk assessment based on HSE INDG143(rev3);
  • use of TILE for both ‘de facto’ and formal risk assessments;
  • risk assessment of pushing and pulling tool HSE INDG478;
  • lifting/carrying techniques/team handling operations;
  • practical assessments; and
  • DVDs relating to manual handling in the workplace.
